Rotary, Google join forces (Rotary.org News)

A selection of covers throughout the years. Scans of issues of The Rotarian are now available through Google Books. Rotary has teamed up with Google to make nearly 100 years of The Rotarian available free online.

Full-color, searchable scans of all issues of the magazine from 1959 to 2008 are now available through Google Books, with more issues to follow. The site is accessible from The Rotarian's page on the RI Web site.

Users can select from a gallery of issues organized by decade or click 'Search all issues' to search the entire catalog for a word or phrase.

The collaboration is part of an initiative to make Rotary's historical resources more accessible to Rotarians worldwide.

'Google is doing all of the scanning and indexing to make the material searchable -- and at no cost to Rotary,' says Stephanie Giordano, archivist for Rotary International.

More than 72,000 pages will be available once Google finishes scanning and uploading all 1,100 issues. The first issue was published in January 1911, when the magazine was called The National Rotarian.

Some issues of interest include December 1979, which reported on Rotary's first polio immunization project; the February 2005 centennial issue; and issues from the 1980s discussing the admission of women into Rotary.

Rotary Spotlight: Kaitlin Walters - Rotary Scholarship Recipient

Kaitlin (center) was a successful nomination from our Rotary District (6250)for a scholarship to pursue graduate work in Health Communications. Her studies will include both art and medical courses, and she wants to be able to use talents to help educate people through medical illustration. Congratulations to Kaitlin, and thank you for letting us be a part of your journey to serve the world! Kaitlin was a guest of Mary Kay Von Allmen (left) and H. Paul Bergmann (right) at the August 11th meeting of the Sun Prairie Rotary Club.

I Survived Book'n It 2009!

A hearty congratualtions to all the participants who stuck around through the nasty thunderstorms and ran in today's 2009 Book'n It Run in Sheehan Park. We canceled the kids run, but ended up holding a mini-run for those kids who stuck around. Our participants are shown here. Amazingly enough, the lightning let up even though the rain did not, and a lot of folks still ran.

Madison East Club Captures the Bell From Sun Prairie Club

Madison East Rotarians Kris Ashe, Diane Walleser, and Nancy Wills accept the bell from Sun Prairie Rotary Club President Dan O'Brien at the August 4th Sun Prairie Rotary Meeting. The Madison East Club captured it with assitance from H. Paul Bergmann, who made an extra contribution during the "Happy Dollars" portion of the meeting for his willing assistance to the Madison East Club. Plotting has already begun to capture it again!

Local Students Participate in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Training

Our presenters on July 28th were our local participants in the RYLA training conference this past year. Rose Freidel (far left) was our local Rotarian who drove them up to camp and back. What is the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Conference?

The RYLA Conference is a 3-day leadership training opportunity that focuses on the personal and professional development of high school students. Leadership skills, concepts, and metaphors are explored through participatory outdoor-based activities that include trust building exercise, problem solving initiatives, and low and high challenge course experiences.

Who exactly is it for?

The RYLA Conference is for sophomores and juniors in high school.

Where does it take place?

The RYLA Conference takes place at Camp Manito-wish YMCA in Boulder Junction, WI.

Why does it exist?

Strong leaders are made, not born. Leadership principles are learned not inherited. RYLA Conference participants, the “leaders of tomorrow,” deserve the opportunity to be exposed to many facets of leadership. The RYLA Conference provides an enjoyable and valuable experience for those who chose to meet the challenge.

The purpose of the RYLA Conference is:

To encourage, assist and train selected youth leaders and potential youth leaders in responsible and effective leadership;
To publicly recognize the high qualities of the many young people who are rendering service to their communities as youth leaders; and
To demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth.

At the RYLA Conference, participants:

Learn the fundamentals of collaborative leadership;
Understand the importance of communication skills in effective leadership;
Build self-confidence and self-esteem;
Practice problem solving and conflict management;
Examine the ethics of positive leadership; and
Transfer leadership skills and action plan for the future.

Sun Prairie Club Captures Rotary Bell from DeForest

For clubs in Diststict 6250, one club has the privelege of hosting this very special Rotary Bell that was gifted to one of our district clubs while they were on one of their international projects. If one district club wants to "Capture the Bell" from the host club, at least 5% of the capturing club needs to attend the host club's meeting. The DeForest Rotary Club even paid for lunch for our "invading" members, which included H. Paul Bergmann, Julie Marshall, Jan Moore, Fred Geisler, and Mary Kay Von Allmen (Not Pictured). Rumor is Sun Prairie is going to have the bell captured from us this coming week. In the above photo, Sun Prairie Rotary President Dan O'Brien accepts the bell from our team.

Matching Grants

For general information about District Matching Grants, click here. Through Matching Grants, The Rotary Foundation matches contributions raised for international service projects by Rotary clubs and districts in two or more countries. The Foundation provides a one-to-one match for District Designated Fund (DDF)/SHARE contributions and a US$0.50 match for every new $1 cash contribution. Grant awards range from $5,000 to $150,000.

How to apply for District Matching Grants

Applications for District Matching Grants are accepted from 1 July to 31 March and approved from 1 August to 15 May. Requests over $25,000 will be considered by the Trustees at their October meeting; completed applications must be received by 1 August.
